There are so many ways that you can save money by embracing an eco-friendly life. We’re going to focus on the 5 main things to remember whenever you’re about to do anything around the home or about to get your wallet out to spend some money. Here are my Top 5 eco-friendly tips to save money…
Top 5 Eco-Friendly Tips To Save Money
1. Use Less Water
- Take shorter showers
- Install a low flow shower head
- Use greywater to water the garden
- Collect rainwater in a water butt to water the garden
- Use a full load when washing your clothes
- Don’t leave the tap running while brushing your teeth
These tips can help save you an awful lot of money if you’re on a water meter, but you’ll find you can save money even if you don’t currently have a water meter at home. Read more about using less water.
2. Use Less Energy
- Switch lights off when you leave a room
- Unplug electrical items when they’ve finished charging
- Do your laundry at 30º or less
- Line dry your clothes instead of using a tumble dryer
- Buy energy efficient appliances (that can be repaired if they break)
- Turn the thermostat down slightly
- Reduce how long the central heating is on in the morning and evening
- Only fill the kettle with as much water as you need
Some of these are easy to do every single day, others you should do whenever you can. For example, for some people using a tumble dryer is a necessity if they have a houseful of people and no garden / clothes line; so when possible dry some laundry on a clothes airer to reduce how often you use the tumble dryer. 3. Be a little more organised
- Make a meal plan
- Write a shopping list and stick to it
- Know the best route to take if you have several places to visit in the car
This is one of the easiest ways to save money. It’ll prevent you from buying things you don’t need and probably prevent quite a bit of food wastage too. By thinking about which shops you need to visit and the quickest and best route to get there, you save money on fuel and you’re reducing pollution as well. Read more easy ways to go green.
4. Purchase pre-loved
- Visit charity shops or secondhand shops online
- Check out facebook marketplace
- Look for secondhand furniture on ebay
- Ask friends, family and neighbours to think of you first if they’re getting rid of stuff
- Look out for things for sale on shop noticeboards
- Visit car boot sales to pick up some amazing bargains
Almost everything you need can be bought pre-loved. Whether that’s baby clothes or toys, furniture or appliances. By buying secondhand you’re saving valuable resources and it will normally cost you a lot less.
5. Buy only what you need
This one is probably the most obvious, but it’s very easy to get in the habit of just buying more and more stuff. Whether that’s a top you quite like in H&M or some biscuits you didn’t plan on getting. It’s ok to treat yourself occasionally and it’s ok to have ‘nice things’ decorating your house. All I’m saying here is, think twice about buying something. Do you need it? Do you really love it that much? Are you aware of where and how it was made? The less you buy, the less impact you’ll have on the planet and the more money you’ll have in the bank for when you do actually need it; like when there’s a global crisis and you lose your income!
Just doing one of these things will save you money in the long term, but if you really want to save money do as many of them as you possibly can and you’ll be making a very real difference to your impact on the planet. Yes, some of the these tips are obvious, but it’s so easy to forget the first two of the 5 R’s when you’re out and about; Refuse (refuse to buy), Reduce (reduce how much you buy).
