Why Lemons Are Amazing

Lemons are an ingredient that every eco-friendly household should have, in some form, at all times. There are many uses for lemons from being used to clean things as well as being good for you and they’re very tasty. Let’s look at all the ways lemons can be used, from the very to the not so obvious.

Benefits Of Lemons
“Lemons contain a high amount of vitamin C, soluble fiber, and plant compounds that give them a number of health benefits. Lemons may aid weight loss and reduce your risk of heart disease, anemia, kidney stones, digestive issues, and cancer.” – 6 Evidence-Based Health Benefits of Lemons

The Many Uses For Lemons

1. Start Your Day With a Hot Lemon Drink

So many ‘health blogs’ advise you to start your day with a glass of lemon and hot water and that’s because of the many health benefits.

2. Add a slice of lemon to a glass of cold water

Following on from the above, having a glass of cold water with a slice of lemon is a refreshing and slightly tastier way to drink enough water throughout the day. Don’t forget you should be drinking 8 glasses of water every day!

3. Make Delicious Desserts

I’m a huge fan of lemony desserts. My mother makes a really tasty lemon drizzle cake and who doesn’t love a lemon meringue pie? Here’s a vegan lemon meringue pie recipe, and a recipe for vegan lemon drizzle cake. Yum!

4. Use Lemon Juice & Baking Soda to Clean Brass

6. In a multi-purpose spray

Using a mixture of water, vinegar and lemon juice is a really way good way to clean surfaces all around the house.

7. Clean water marks on taps

A lemon can clean away those annoying water marks on your bathroom taps.

9. Lemons are a natural disinfectant

There’s a reason why so many natural cleaners include using lemons and that’s because lemons are a natural disinfectant.

10. Cleaning your chopping board

If, like me, you eat a lot of garlic you might find your chopping board is becoming a little smelly. Rubbing the chopping board with lemon will help to remove the garlicky smell which can taint other foods you’ve put on the chopping board.

11. Bonus – Use it in soup

A squeeze of lemon juice really brings out the flavours in this delicious Armenian Soup, which is made from a potato, red lentils, apricots and cumin.

Lemons, along with baking soda and vinegar, are cleaning must-haves in my house. They’re natural, non-toxic and plastic free too. Using the remains of a squeezed lemon as a cleaning implement is also eco-friendly because none of it is going to waste!

Although not that useful for cleaning, coconuts also have many uses. Have a read of the uses of coconuts.
